THREE PEAKS

The Dolomites at their most beautiful

The Three Peaks (Tre Cime di Lavaredo, Drei Zinnen) in the Sesto Dolomites are an impressive mountain massif. The three summits consist of scree and stone. Cima Grande is 2,999 m high. It is in the middle one of the three, framed by Cima Occidentale, 2,973 m and Cima Piccola, 2,857 m. There are three further inconspicuous peaks that form part of the massif. They are Cima Piccolissima, 2,700 m, Torre Minore and Punta di Frida 2,792 m. The north face is one of the best-known aspects of the Alps and the symbol of the Dolomites.

Hikes around the Three Peaks
Many hiking tours lead from the surrounding villages to the Three Peaks. The path from Rifugio Auronzo (2,333 m ) to Rifugio Locatelli (2,405 m), is one of the best-known trails.
Also beautiful is the climb via Val Fiscalina in Sesto and Val Sasso Vecchio to Rifugio Locatelli.

You can also go on an “Alpine hut tour” from Sesto. It includes stops at Rifugio Locatelli, Rifugio Pian di Cengia and Rifugio Comici.

Rifugio Auronzo can also be reached via a toll road that enables easy access from Lago di Misurina (1,756 m) into the world of the Sesto Dolomites.
The border between the Provinces of South Tyrol in the North and Belluno in the South runs through the tops of the Three Peaks. Until 1919 the line of Monte Paterno-Forcella Lavaredo-Three Peaks was the national border between Italy and Austria.
Today it still represents a boundary between places where the German language and the Italian language are spoken.
