During the First World War Alta Pusteria was a theatre of war: Austrians and Italians fought against each other on Croda Rossa and Monte Piano. 20,000 soldiers, Italians and Austrians, lost their lives here and were laid to rest in the war cemeteries.

Monte Piano in Dobbiaco
The hiking trail up the Monte Piano leads through the former front, along carefully restored trenches, tunnels and the locations from where bombs were launched. In the Rifugio Bosi you can see a collection of objects found.

Bellum Aquilarum in Sesto
From the beginning of July to the end of September the association Bellum Aquilarum ONLUS offers guided historic tours to the open-air-museum several times a week. There is a Bellum Aquilarum exhibition in the village.
